The Devil’s Artisan
‘Though an angel should write, / still ’tis devils must print.’
— Thomas Moore (1779–1852)
ENDPAPERS
The following collection of endpapers has been graciously provided by Jan Figurski, whose passion for the book arts has, over the years, led him to take up letterpress printing, paper making, publishing, bookbinding, and antiquarian book restoring. Jan is also, as it happens, a retired librarian, who at one time was responsible for disposing of discards weeded from the Special Collections of the University of Western Ontario's School of Library and Information Science.
‘Many of the weeded items were antiquarian, but they were falling apart,’ recalled Jan. ‘When they couldn't be sold or otherwise disposed of, I at least salvaged the marbled endpapers.’
Jan notes that most of the endpapers are British in origin, dating back to the early 1800s, but the collection includes some French and Italian endpapers of varying age.
