Peek Inside the Covers of DA 82

Every year at the Grimsby Wayzgoose, we unveil the latest issue of the Devil’s Artisan. We recently completed DA82, featuring the richly symbolic visual art of multitalented author James Reaney. We’ve also got some short, fun pieces on the cylinder press at Black Creek Pioneer Village as well as early printing in the Yukon. Take a gander at these photos to get a sense of the joys that await!

This eye-catching spread, featuring a page from the satirical magazine gaMbiT, is from the featured article, “The Visual Art of James Reaney and the Iconography of His Imagination” by Tom Smart.

Stephen Sword’s “The Tale of a Mechanical Marvel: The R. Hoe Large Cylinder Press at Black Creek Pioneer Village” is full of history, as well as images of the press at work.

Spread from Chelsea Jeffery's "Notes on Early Printing in the Yukon"

Chelsea Jeffery contributed “Notes on Early Printing in the Yukon”, documenting a seldom studied aspect of Canadian print history.

Keepsake: Portrait of Bill Poole.

Of course, every copy of DA comes with a keepsake. In this issue, we have a portrait of Bill Poole, engraved on wood and printed letterpress by George A. Walker on paper donated by the Japanese Paper Place.

portraitWell what do you think? If you don’t have your copy yet, be sure to pick one up here. There is so much to look at in this one that a few pictures really don’t do it justice.

Celebrating Robert R. Reid at Massey College

Robert R. Reid is an illustrious typographer and graphic designer, and a leader in Canada’s private press community. In celebration of Reid’s 90th birthday, and in recognition of his 69 years of designing and printing, the Robertson Davies Library at Massey College mounted an exhibition of some of his works, curated by Chester Gryski. DA Editor Don McLeod attended the opening reception on February 13 and brought us some pictures to enjoy.

The First Ever Bound Book Arts Fair

The Bound Book Arts Fair is a brand new book fair that was held for the first time December 2 in the Great Hall of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto. The event grew out of the sad cancellation of the OCAD U Book Arts Fair, and admirably filled in the gap with an opportunity for bookish browsing right before the holidays. The event featured books, prints, broadsides, cards and other bookish delights. A fascinating exhibit of antique typewriters was also on site, for attendees’ viewing pleasure. Three cheers for Don McLeod, for once again lending his photography talents.

A bird’s eye view of the fair. Also proof positive that the Great Hall at the Arts and Letters Club kind of looks like Hogwarts.

Still more typewriters. I think these are my favourite of the bunch!

Printing press

Of course at a book arts fair there MUST be a press!

portraitMany thanks to all who turned out for the event. A big shout out to the event sponsors, the Japanese Paper Place, Aboveground Art Supplies and The Alcuin Society, as well as to the organizer, Michelle Walker, and designer, Kathleen Parle. Looking forward to next year’s event! For more photos of the Bound Book Arts Fair, be sure to check out their Facebook Page.sig

Meet the Presses Indie Literary Market 2017

This weekend, the Porcupine’s Quill and the Devil’s Artisan were in Toronto for the annual Meet the Presses Indie Literary Market. The event took place at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre on November 18, and attracted an enthusiastic group of attendees interested in books, chapbooks, broadsides, zines and other creative materials. DA’s Don McLeod was there with his trusty camera, and we are pleased to share some of his photos.

The Devil's Artisan is remarkable in Canadian publishing in that most of the physical production of our journal is completed in-house at the shop on the Main Street of Erin Village. We print on a twenty-five inch Heidelberg KORD, typically onto acid-free Zephyr Antique laid. The sheets are then folded, and sewn into signatures on a 1907 model Smyth National Book Sewing machine.

To take a virtual tour of the pressroom, visit us at YouTube for a discussion of offset printing in general, and the operation of a Heidelberg KORD in particular. Other videos include Four Colour Printing, Smyth Sewing and Wood Engraving. Photographs of production machinery used on these pages were taken by Sandra Traversy on site at the printing office of the Porcupine's Quill, December 2008.

The Devil's Artisan would like to acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Magazine Fund (CMF) through the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines (SALM) component toward our editorial and production costs. Thanks, as well, for the generosity of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Sleeman Brewing Company.
